Yi Eng also shared stories about his own Master, who went deep into
China's forests when he was young, in a quest for enlightenment. Yi told Mantak that in those forests, his Master found men who were so deep in
meditation that they had left their bodies; sometimes for a year or
more.
As to the question of where they went, Mantak replies "To another
dimension. Before they would go, there were a lot of procedures. They
had to learn how to stop eating and seal the senses. Like a turtle that
goes into hibernation for the winter. The Tao always looks at the
turtle. If you make the body stay - die, but not die - your heartbeat
goes down to one level and the spirit and the body separate. It's just
like when they do an operation and the person suddenly goes out. The
spirit goes up and they see lights and colors and stars far away."
"There are many traditions that do this. You can have magic mushrooms,
marijuana, heroin. It is all the same. When you take enough the spirit
doesn't stay in the body. The same thing with LSD, with Timothy Leary -
remember? They even put him on TV and called it the fast lane to
enlightenment. But this is with drugs." Mantak quickly smacks his hands
together in a rising arc and drops them suddenly. "BOOM! WHOOP! You
separate the spirit in the wrong way. A way you cannot control. A lot of
people do not come back. In Taoism we say we can control it. The first
thing you need to have is remote control. Like a toy airplane. You learn
to go farther and farther away."
Mantak may be most well-known for teaching another type of control. It's
called the reverse orgasm. In men, the reverse orgasm is accomplished by
holding back ejaculation during an orgasm. The result, he says, is a
redirection of the intense energy that comes with an orgasm. The energy
is recycled internally and leads to more heightened and prolonged states
of ecstasy. The procedure is similar, if less a bit less blatant, for
women.
The concept of the reverse orgasm also exists in various tantric sexual
traditions, which originated out of ancient India. In these, the focus
is not merely achieving orgasm, but instead maintaining a heightened
state of physical and spiritual arousal that becomes a kind of
meditation in and of itself.
'Sexual energy is very important because it connects with everything," Mantak elaborates. He says that the prostate gland and the uterus are
connected with the pineal gland, which is one of the glands that
produces altered states, such as out of body experiences. 'When you feel
orgasmic withdrawal, the left and right brains synchronize." 'In the Tao
practice, we are very concerned with sexual practice. Because we are
born from sex - from love and sex. So without sexual energy we don't
have energy. Sexual energy is the most powerful energy we have. It is
called the immortal energy."
Another technique for recirculation of energy is to touch the tip of
one's tongue to the roof of the mouth. This creates an internal orbit,
he says. He calls it the microcosmic orbit, says that babies do this
naturally, but most adults stop doing it and 'break the orbit."
In the end, Mantak says, all of the Tao teachings are about alchemy.
'Alchemy is very simple. Everybody does it every day. You get angry, but
you can sit down, get calm and control your emotions. You change one
emotion into another. The Bible talks about 'love your enemy' - that is
alchemy. When we change emotions we change our chemistry."
Before I leave, he shows me photos of his retreat in Thailand, the Tao
Garden Health Spa & Resort. It looks like an upscale vacation spot with
tennis courts, hotel-like accommodations, luxurious swimming pools and a
lake surrounded by lush hills.
A few of the pictures feature a unique round building. Mantak says it
was specially built for deep meditation. "This is the Dark Room. No
light gets inside. When it is so dark, you can only see the light from
another person.. In the Dark Room, after four or five days your body
produces DMT (Dimethyltryptamine, chemical associated with
hallucinogenic effects) and you start out-of-body experiences. But
without the chemicals. That is the difference! This you can control."
